Websites for bars and clubs
I have developed a small flexible system for generating websites in multiple languages for small businesses who wish to have up to date information on their web and manage that information themselves.
See this page for high level details. More information can be found by clicking on the links below.
- Web SW Development Based on MySQL, Apache2 and CSS. The webs differ only in a few lines of a custom CSS and the images. NOTE : I am not a graphics designer or web page designer of any sort. But the underlying simple to administer CSS/PHP based framework makes it pretty easy to manage your own web.
-
The tech
- All code written in CSS, PHP and XHTML.
- Tech is quite nice, but I'm no graphics designer…
- Extremely easy to administer event handling and multinational translations.
- Emacs 22 used in conjunction with nxhtml mode for all development.
- Emacs is a programmer's dream. The ultimate editor and work environment.
- Using FireBug in Firefox, tracking down CSS issues is a doddle.
- MySQL database used to store all events and language specific message data. Cheap, cheerful and the PHPMYADMIN interface makes it accessible to just about anyone.
- I use Virtualbox running on an another XMonad workspace to host Windows Vista in order to test my code on IE6 and IE8.
- A Sample : the real code for the quiz page (minus header and footer code).

Emacs as an Integrated Development Environment
Emacs is a wonder. There is almost nothing it can not achieve. Not always the best, sometimes kludgy, but the convenience of doing everything from one interface and usage paradigm offsets any apparent weaknesses.
Operating Systems
All my machines currently run Debian Lenny (testing). A remarkably stable system but still incorporating up to date fixes and patches for latest HW. I dual boot my main machine to Windows XP primarily for playing windows only SW which requires directX which is not directly supported on Linux under VMWare.
